Initially assumed this was a genuine call to book an installation appointment, as my smart meter does need replacing, but googled afterwards and saw a lot of negative reports. I checked with British Gas live chat, who first said it was a scam and then when I asked if it could be an external contractor, backtracked and said it was genuine!
The live chat obviously didn't exactly fill me with confidence, but shortly afterwards I received an email confirmation from British Gas for the installation appointment so it seems it is genuine after all. (email address is [email protected] in case anyone is thinking the email is a scam too!) -

Just had a call from this number. Some very foreign woman asked for me by name and said she was calling on behalf of British Gas. I told her she didn't sound very British, and that I didn't have a British Gas account, and she hung up.
We do have a British Gas account, but utilities are in my Wife's name. How she got my name I have no idea. Obviously a scammer, especially considering the reports on other sites.
