This is British gas, and they make appointments without asking you, to install smart meters, I went online and cancelled, if you don't they will turn up and I've read if you don't let them in or are out, they will bill you for their time, absolutely ridiculous!

Sadly, this IS British gas. I phoned them, and they admitted that yes, they do make presumptive appointments for smart meter installs, with the onus on the customer to cancel them. The appointment was also on my British Gas online account. There is, currently, NO obligation to have smart meters installed. Sadly, you can't cancel the appointment online, you have to phone them. I've not cancelled yet, but put my details in an online complaint, and instructed them to cancel it. If need be, I'll make the call before the appointment to cancel it. One of my meters is outside, and they'd be able to access it.

This is a genuine British Gas number. I called them and they confirmed that they had indeed booked an appointment for a smart meter installation, despite me not requesting it. They agreed to cancel the appointment. I expressed my frustration at having my time wasted needing to cancel an appointment that I did not request, and indicated that I would look to switch supplier if I receive another such unsolicited appointment.
